Research & Development of large crankshafts

Besides our own continuous optimization and development regarding the materials used and the machining and treatment processes involved, nearly every large crankshaft order includes a certain R&D component conducted jointly with our customers. ALFING can draw on a wealth of experience and a comprehensive knowledge base.

However, the individual and very specific requirements of our customers for their large crankshafts regularly throw up new technological challenges which need to be solved.

Usually the development procedure for a large crankshaft is as follows:

  • Definition by the customer of the parameters for the new application
  • Initial design of the crankshaft by the customer
  • Joint optimization of the design by the customer and ALFING

Then ALFING takes over:

  • Finalizing the drawings and specification
  • Forging
  • Heat treatment
  • Machining
  • Assembly
  • Final inspection
  • Feedback to the customer
